Downriver Park Spotlight: Huroc Park

By Blair Stamper, Macaroni Kid Downriver Publisher August 10, 2018

Sometimes, you just have to get out of the house.  Sometimes, playing in the backyard just isn’t enough.  Since moving Downriver, I’ve been blown away with the amount of parks in the area.  What’s even better?  Each park has their own quirks and features that make it special.  This is why I have decided to start a monthly Downriver Park spotlight.

Huroc Park– Flat Rock, MI

This month the focus is on Huroc Park in Flat Rock.  The park is located on Arsenal road in what you could call “Downtown Flat Rock.”  It is within walking distance to some amazing restaurants such as Wimpy Burger, Build Your Own Burrito, Captain Nemo’s, Michael’s on the River, and Dairy Queen.  It is also home to the Flat Rock festivals at the beginning and end of summer including Summer Blast and River Fest.

What do I love about the park?

Huroc park is one of my favorite Downriver places to take my daughter.  The Huron River runs through the park – in fact, you have to walk over a beautiful bridge to even get to the play area of the park.  This means lots of wildlife, including ducks and geese (and of course, their babies).

The play area is simple, but it does have baby swings, which is a huge win for me since my daughter is only 11 months old.  There is a paved trail that goes along the water as well as behind the park. This trail also connects to the Downriver Bike Trails and Waterways

But, my absolute favorite part of the park? The library!  At the entrance to the park, there is a “leave a book, take a book” library.  Each time we go to the park, we bring books that my daughter is no longer interested in and trade them for something in the library.  Last time, we were even able to get a Mickey and Minnie book!

Other Features

  • There are two slides – one swirly and one straight – that are actually quite steep.
  • Gazebo
  • Great area for fishing
  • Beautiful photography background
  • Picnic Tables
  • Flat Rock Train Depot
  • Great places for picnics in the grass
  • Lots of shady areas
