We spoke with Brian McNeal from Downriver For Veterans on ways we can help our downriver community on Veteran’s Day, here‘s what he had to say:
Volunteer at a nearby organization. Maybe the VFW, American Legion or USO. All of these organizations lend a hand to veterans around the world and can use a hand. One of the things that most of us can do is drive. The number of vets who need rides to appointments or grocery stores or to some other means of support is incredible. Even if you can't drive, Uber gift cards are a lifeline.
Apply your trade. Pretty much everyone is good at something. Maybe you are an auto mechanic and you can hold basic car repair clinics. Hair dresser, give free haircuts; good with computer -- offer free tech support. Pretty much anyone can lend a hand. I know a group of teens who hook up wifi for seniors and address low level tech problems for seniors.
Learn. There are thousands of great books and movies out there that do a tremendous job of depicting the sacrifices made by veterans. maybe its a cinematic blockbuster like Peral Harbor, or a critically acclaimed film like Dunkirk. American Sniper or Midway. Books like Flags of Our Fathers or Red Blood Black Sand, Our War Was Different, Bloods or a TV show like Band of Brothers. Although entertaining, there ae countless lessons to be learned about sacrifice and duty.

- Michigan Aviation with Local Author Barry Levine. Mr. Levine will discuss the B-52 crash near Charlevoix's Big Rock Nuclear Plant in 1971 and the Northern Michigan Strategic Air Command bases (Kincheloe, Wurtsmith and Sawyer). This presentation will run 45 minutes with time at the end for Q & A. This presentation will be held both in person and via Zoom. In person attendance is very limited, so be sure to register.
